English Abstract

The humans need for replenishing natural lighting with artificial one has emerged since prehistoric times, so they have taken the advantages of fire, torches, candles, lamps, and other tools to see through darkness and to create visual effects.

In light of contemporary and ramified human activities developments, the importance of depending on lighting has been increased to enhance the functional and aesthetic performances of interior and exterior spaces until it has become a priority for interior design.

In this respect, lighting accommodates scientific, artistic, and aesthetic requests of interior design world, and is considered a fundamental factor with effective presence that exceeds its physical properties and psychological influences towards enhancing, improving and enriching the end picture of these spaces.

Consequently, this study aims at identifying types, fixtures, and techniques of artificial lighting inside the space, and manifesting its full potential and actual effect on portraying the interior space aesthetics.

In order to achieve this aim, it is essential to understand the concept and nature of lighting, its types, sources, purposes, basics, and standards of its functionality in order to answer the study question which is "How can we benefit from the artificial lighting element in portraying the functional and aesthetic values of interior space?".

The study hypothesis is mainly based on that there is no interest in artificial lighting element and its effect on the interior space, which, in consequence, reflects negatively on the human and the space.

The researcher adopted the descriptive analytical approach in investigating the study problem to arrive at appropriate findings and solutions through gathering and analyzing data, information, and studies relevant to the lighting subject.

This is in addition to developing a questionnaire for collecting available information about the study area represented in the commercial centers in Gaza city through viewing, observing, surveying, and documenting of the targeted locations.

The study concluded with several results, the most important of which is that artificial lighting element is considered a visual effect with enormous possibilities that can create an exciting interior environment.

It also contributes to the human comfort and the success or failure of the space design.

Furthermore, it is considered a pillar in attracting customers to the products displayed inside the commercial centers.

However, lighting fixtures are double-edged sword that should be balanced in its strength, intensity, and shape.

The most important recommendations include conducting further studies that tackle down the artificial lighting subject and its role in various architectural spaces.

This is in addition to promote and disseminate the culture of visual sense of lighting, its importance, role and significant influence on our internal environment.
