Abstract EN

Literary works are considered to be perfect when its utterance and meaning are appropriate and compatible.

That is exactly what real writers work to achieve, by using their own tools and methods.

Writers should have their special language that enlighten emotions and sharpen ideas, not used by the public, but deep and creative.

If their language does not have such features, then it is not a language of poetry and literature.

The issue of utterance and meaning has ancient roots in the history of Arabic criticism as it dates back to the era of Abu 'Uthman Amr ibn Bahr Al-Jahiz.

Some of his sayings has been interpreted by critics, and there were correct and wrong explanations.

Although it is an old issue in Arabic literature, critics were only interested in Al-Jahz’s famous statement: "Meanings are to be found in the highways and byways …".

Then, when critical studies have been developed, provisions changed and differed from what preceded.

Today, some critics assume that Al-Jahiz separates between the utterance and the meaning.

Others follow Al-Jahiz’s view, in which he does not separate between the utterance and the meaning, but believes that there’s no value for the utterance without the meaning.

A third group studied the issue according to the theories of modern linguistics and reviewed a comprehensive overview through the books of Al-Jahiz.
