English Abstract

There are many worries related to the ability of boards to strategically guide their organizations in all sectors.

The key aim of this research is to examine the effectiveness of boards of NPOs in the Gaza Strip; through understanding the environment of the local working organizations, determining the extent of availability of specialized, competences of the member of boards of directors, identifying the major challenges faced board of director in NPOs in Gaza Strip.

The research followed the descriptive, analytical approach and depends on many techniques to accomplish this study namely questionnaire and focus group.

The study sample consisted of board of directors and managers who works in relief associations in Gaza strip.

The total number of sample individuals was 200; and about 156 questionnaires were distributed and 124 were collected, and distributed 40 questionnaires as a pilot study.

The main results of this study are; Boards have limited awareness about their roles and responsibilities, but they suffer from lacking evaluation and training cultures, there is a diversity of relevant competencies in the board of directors, the boards member rarely requests periodic reports on staff's morals.

There is a gap between boards member and staff.

The board of directors do not focus on studying warning signals before crises occur in order to avoid them.

The boards of directors have not strongly a clear vision for the development of the association, and the main recommendation is to increase the effectiveness of boards in relief societies in Gaza Strip in order to build organizations that are more active.
