The Electronic monitoring, also known as SEC or Supervised Electronic Confinement, is not a principal sentence but a way of serving sentence, and it is an alternative to serving time in jail by allowing individuals to live at home but permitting the offenders to venture out of the residence to authorized locations and at certain pre-approved times while being monitored via an electronic ankle bracelet that tracks the offenders movements and location.

The Electronic monitoring was adopted by Law No18/01 of January 30, 2018, compels Algeria to be the first Arab country and the second African country after South Africa,like the developed American and European countries that have been operating since the end of the twentieth century.

The system of electronic monitoring is introduced as an alternative to short-term deprivation of liberty by making the convicted person serving his sentence or what is left of it outside the walls of the penal institutions, in his place of residence.
