The objective of this paper is to estimate the size of the informal economy in Algeria during the period 1970-2016 using the MIMIC approach (Multiple Indicators and Multiple Causes).
The results show that the hidden part of economy in Algeria constitutes 47.4% of the official GDP in 2016.
We find that an increased budget deficit and urbanisation rate are the driving forces of the shadow economy in Algeria.
