English Abstract

This study was undertaken in order to evaluate some synthetic cultivars of maize that are registered in Iraq, and to determine the high correlated component with grain yield, in order to use it as an indicator for the selection process in affected-soil with salinity.

A field experiment was carried out in the Agricultural Research office, Abu-Ghraib, in the spring seasons of 2008 and 2009.

Four synthetic cultivars were used in this experiment, namely: 5012, 5015, and 5018 and Bohoth 106.

The experiment was conducted in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD), with three replications.

Results indicated that the performance of genotypes 5012, 5015 and 2018 was better in salinity soils for all yield components, as they are suitable for the spring and fall seasons, in comparison with Bohoth 106, which is suitable for only fall seasons.

The best correlation for grain yield was with cob length and number of grains in cob in the two years of the study.

Therefore, the seed rate must be increased in area unit in order to compensate for productivity reduction, because the reduction in the number of plants until the end of the harvesting time and rely on number of grains in selection programs in the future in affected soil with salinity in order to improve yield quantity
