English Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of prolactin gene polymorphism on milk production and reproductive performance in Friesian cows reared under farming conditions in the middle of Iraq.

Fifty five Friesian cows reared in private ruminants farm in the middle of Iraq (AL-Dewanya province) were used to investigate the relationship between prolactin (PRL) gene polymorphism with some of milk production and reproductive traits in cattle by using Restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) and RsaI enzyme .

Results showed that the DNA restriction fragments for the PRL-RsaI polymorphism: 82 and 74 bp for MM genotype 156, 82 and 74 bp for LM genotype and 156 bp for LL genotype.

The allele frequency of M and L allele was 0.65 and 0.35 respectively.

The significant difference (P˂0.01) among cow groups in milk yield, the highest milk yield was observed in cows with LM (2008 kg) while the lowest milk yield was observed in MM group.

Crevice per conception increased significantly (P˂0.01) in cows with LL genotype (3.52) compared with individuals with LM and MM genotypes.

Days open differed significantly (P˂0.05) among cow groups, the highest period was in cows with LL genotype while the least period was in cows with MM genotype namely, 179.55 and 161.19 day respectively.

Age at first calving was varied significantly (P˂0.01) from 32.98 days in the LM genotype group to 35.14 months in cows with LL genotype.

No significant difference among the PRL genotypes groups in calving interval.
