Abstract EN

Background & Objective: Quadriceps Femoris Fibrosis is a source of parental concern which can be congenital or acquired during child growth.

The aim of this study is to assess and compare different surgical approaches followed in Children University Hospital with international research, and to clarify the role of different factors affecting the results.

Materials &Methods: it is a retrospective study evaluating 161 child (45% male & 55% female) with 213 cases of Quadriceps Femoris Fibrosis (25% congenital & 75% acquired) whom were treated surgically (by divideing contractures muscle origin in 36 cases, Sengupta’s Proximal Release in 28 cases, and Distal Quadriceps V-Y Plasty in 149 cases) in Children University Hospital in Damascus between 2004 and 2014 and follow-up for a mean period of approximately five years.

Results: complications included 8 cases of wound necrosis, with deformed wide scare in 19 cases, muscle temporary weakness in 18 cases which became permanent in 4 cases, partial recurrence in 15 cases and total recurrence in 7 cases.

Physical therapy helped in improving post-surgery total range of motion from 88 degree to 105 degree which appeared by good to excellent result in 80% of the cases in the final assessment.

Conclusion Distal Quadriceps V-Y Plasty is a safe and effective surgical approach in treatment with no increase in complication when compared with international researches.

Frequent Intramuscular injection in the early age is the major risk factor for this injury and need more caution to be avoided.
