Abstract EN

The study aims at recognising how far the number sense skills are available among grade eight students in basic education in the governorate of Homs in addition to suggesting a plan for developing such skills.

The plan has been applied to 339 male and female grade eight students in basic education during the school year 2015-2016.

The researcher analysed the contents of unit three topics in the algebra book for grade eight in basic education in the Syrian Arab republic.

The researcher also prepared a test for measuring the availability of number sense skills among students.

Results show the availability of the following number sense skills among students perceiving the absolute and relative quantum of numbers perceiving the relative effect of processes on numbers and perceiving related numbers.

On the other hand a weakness in the following skills has been identified renaming numbers perceiving and using distinctive mark and perceiving the strategies of mental calculation and approximate conjecturing.

The research recommends the necessity of rethinking the new curricula in basic education so that the number sense concept is adopted in them clearly and in an integrated way with the topics of mathematics.

The research also suggests conducting more research in all school stages.
