The paper emphasizes the relations between e- learning, smart education and twentieth first century skills and knowledge management.

The economic process end product of the smart education is the professional competence, a set of knowledge acquired by a person who uses them to take part in other economic processes.

The input in this economic process is represented by people who accumulate knowledge and skills through the educational system.

Living in a knowledge-based society driven by the wide-spread diffusion of ICT(Information, Communication, and Technology) does indeed give rise to the need for acquiring new digital competences and ICT skills.
