Abstract EN

We explore, in the present paper, the reality of the Arabic contemporary verse translation into English amidst cultural and ideological hindrances, reflected mostly in the western dominance and the Arabic culture inferiority stereotypes.

We also shed light on some of the countless obstacles, mostly those connected to nuances in poetry traditions and aesthetic values that are likely to hamper the process of translation, and the potential ways to get past them.

Other contextrelated problems are referred to as well, namely the huge pressure put on some translators by poets who commissioned them to translate anthologies of their works.

As a case study, some samples of Nizar KABBANI’s translated verses by Bassam FRANGIAH are studied and analyzed for further consolidation of the present paper’s findings.
