Abstract EN

This paper tackles three basic disputed concepts in Interpreting through the last two decades: mediation, neutrality and fidelity.

If neutrality and fidelity are two uncontested axioms as established by the Codes of Ethics, the actual practices of interpreters in direct meetings and interactions as in Community Interpreting prove the opposite.

The interpreters4 role as mediators in communication conduces to the issue of neutrality in mediation.

Those concepts seem to be distinct, yet they interact and affect one another, functioning in a common context ruling the interpretative process and defining subsequently the final rendition of the interpreter.
