Abstract EN

From a philosophical perspective, man is considered to be an ethical creature when it comes to his primacy, and he is to be conscious about it only in the presence of the other, when the relation takes its ethical form, a presence that embraces a world of values where love is considered to be its initial source.

From this premise, we will try to simplify Vladimir Jankélévitch’s point of view concerning the concept of love and the clarification of its status in its whole ethical philosophy by describing it as the sole founder and source of any value and virtue.

Although the ethical question is not appointed in it –considering it as the first topic of philosophy, which occupies the throne of the other topics and problematics- except with a phenomenological orientation that is based on the opinion saying that consciousness is always a consciousness of something, love, which is regarded by Vladimir as the initial source of all values, addresses only the other in an unconditional movement that does not pay attention to the “I’ as much as it glorifies the “YOU” with a great love.

Maybe that’s what the poet Rainer Maria Rilke meant in his book “Letters to a Young Poet”, deeply agreeing with Jankélévitch’s decisive statement when he declared that love is our most difficult function, our final task and evidence, when man becomes aware of himself for the sake of the other.
