Abstract EN

Some Arab thinkers and critics have come to read the religious text according to new intellectual visions stemming from the principle of acculturation with the critical thought generated by the philosophy of modernity and what came beyond and the methods it created.

Among these is the thinker Mohammad Arkoun, who seeks to overcome the classical understanding of the religious discourse in general and the Quoranic discourse in particular because, in his opinion, the latter has made the meaning constant and rigid since the age of prophecy to date; on the contrary, it has been biased and manipulated.

Therefore, he sees that the modernist reading by employing linguistic approaches, and the approaches of social and human sciences are the most able to overcome the rudimentary meanings and to access the deep structures of this discourse and all that is associated with it to unveil some facts and highlight them.

The Surah of Repentance (Surah At-tawba) has been the field in which he applied his modernist reading.

Why did he choose this surah? How did he use the above-mentioned approaches to discuss the verses of the surah ? What mechanisms did he use? What did this reading add to the Quoranic text ?
