Two analytical techniques namely, atomic absorption and ion chromatography are used for the total content analyses of heavy elements in water and sediments from Ismaelia canal.
In ion chromatographic technique, Pyridine Dicaroboxylic Acid (PDCA) as an eluent is used.
An agreement in the concentrations is observed between ion chromatography and atomic absorption spectrometry measurements.
Ion chromatograph technique with visible absorbance detection at 520 nm is used for speciation of iron in water samples.
Fe(II) and Fe(III) species were separated by ion exchange column CS5A using pyridine 2,6 dicarboxylic acid (PDCA) as eluent, followed detection by coloring reagent 4-2 pyridylazo resorcinol (PAR).Total iron concentration was determined by atomic absorption spectrometry.
The detection limit of Fe(II) and Fe(III) by ion chromatograph are 100 g/l and 200 g/l respectively, while detection limit of total iron by atomic absorption spectrometry is 80 g/l.
