Abstract EN

The current study concerns with the historical development of the major ports along the Gulf of Suez during the Arabian age in Egypt, extending from the Arab conquest till the Ottoman conquest.

During this period most of Egyptian ports along the Red Sea and the Gulf of Suez underwent a flourish activities, especially after the excavation of “Amer Al-Moamenin (commander of the faithful) channel”, connecting the river Nile with Suez region.

The historical importance of the study area is highly appreciated, especially during that period when Egypt was a cornerstone along the world major trade routes.

This research shed some lights on the geographical factors that controlled the navigation movement in Gulf of Suez, the economic activity, historical development, and the transit trade of the three major ports of Qulzom, Suez, and El-Tur.

The research also discusses the consequences of the Ottoman conquest on the deterioration of trade activity in the study area and the collapse of Egyptian superiority on the major trade routs after the discovery of the Good Hope sea route which bypassed Egypt and the Middle East.
