Abstract EN

This research deals with the soil salinity problem(Sebakh) in eastern part of Basrah Governorate.

Its soils were reclamated and cultivated in the Islamic second decade .Thus they were producing huge amounts of fruit and vegetables .This was due to proficient utilization of gravity and ebb and tide phenomena through excavating more than 500 irrigation/ .

drainage canals in this part However,the above status had not been continued due to being exposed to physical and human problems such as rise of saline ground water levels,high air temperature, increase of irrigation water salinity .excess of irigation water.muddy loam soils and outer offensives of its population.

The researcher studied soil salinity of this part during the beginning of 80s of the last century .After 25 years the second reaercher made the same investigations .Both revealed that the soils are facing serious problem which are represented by soil salinity,shrinkage of the cultivated areas into narrow belts on both sides of the Shatt al Arab,Tigres and Euphrates rivers Jow crop production,and neglignce of wide areas of the agricultural lands.

Suggestions of soil reclamations and proposed crops can be utilized to diminish this problems.
