Abstract EN

The Iranian Attitudes towards the Iraqi Issues (1963 – 1958) In spite of the historical and religious neighborhood links between the two peoples of Iraq and Iran, the conflict between the two states has lasted for several and different eras; thus, each era could reflect the power balance between these two countries.

In this regard, the conflicts between the two countries escalated notably with the outbreak of the Iraqi Revolution on July 14th 1958, especially after the success of this revolution under the leadership of Abd al-Karim Qasim in eliminating the Iraqi royal regime, the Iranian ally in Baghdad Pact.

Since the first months of the revolution, Iran started to use the natural, human and economic elements of the geographical proximity with Iraq, in order to expand their influence in Iraq in a way that threatens Iraq's stability as well as the unity of her people and territories.

In addition, the main goal of Iran was to attain a leading regional position, and to weaken Iraq's military and economic potentials, in order to distract Iraq from her role as a regional Arab counterpart.

In this context, this current study is concerned with "The Iranian Attitudes towards the Iraqi Issues (1963 – 1958)", which is the period of Abd al-Karim Qasim in power in Iraq.

That is to say, this eventful period has been reflected both directly and indirectly on the nature of Iran's attitudes towards Iraq.

Therefore, the researcher has selected a number of specific Iraqi issues that were the focus of attention for the Iranian leadership throughout the Iraqi-Iranian relationships.

On the foregoing, this research aims to answer a number of important questions, such as: 1- How did Iran react towards the Iraqi Revolution? 2-Were the Iranian reactions towards the Kurdish issue in Iraq constant or changeable? And, how far were they linked to the Iranian interests? 3-As for handling the issue of Shatt al-Arab, what was the difference between dealing with the Iraqi revolution government and dealing with their prior governments at the royal era?
