Abstract EN

Portraying meaning is of more importance than using the right words only.

This is what Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) was very well aware of.

Within the short story The Tell-Tale Heart that consists of about four pages, Poe used 489 punctuation marks, a very considerable number.

This paper attempts to stylistically analyze the meaning behind such punctuations, and how they represent the psychological conflict of the main character, using thereby Freud‟s theories, along with a thorough evaluation on both the linguistic and literary dimension.
