Abstract EN

This scientific paper attempts to shed light on a phenomenon that seems to be scientific, but is in fact a product of political, security, social and economic influences.

It is the phenomenon of the adjacency/ neighbouring of Algerian scholars to the two venerable sanctuaries (the two holy mosques in Saudi Arabia) during the Ottoman period (1518- 1830 ) Translations & autobiographies are seldom free of phrases and expressions like “ He neighboured the two venerable sanctuaries for...”, “ he performed pilgrimage and neighboured...” and they usually transmit news of neighbors and their relationships with their new environment i.e what they take and give.

But the problem is related to that of the neighboring (or neighborhood) phenomenon of Algerians itself and the search of its causes and reasons, through its circumstances to its the effects and consequences.

Where distinguished scholars and cultured Algerian “neighbors” - whose number had significantly doubled in the Ottoman era- have become visiting professors in the institutes and schools of Mecca or Medina.

They spread their science and arts, and contribute to the enrichment of cultural communication between the east and the west.
