Arabic Abstract

تركز هذه الدراسة على الكلمات المحظورة و التعبيرات الملطفة في ترجمتين لـ "1984" لجورج أورويل الترجمة الأولى هي للحارث النبهان، و الأخرى لأنور الشامي.

التعبير الطيفي هو استبدال الكلمات أو التعبيرات المحظورة لتجنب التعابير المباشرة، إما لتخفيف حدة الموقف القاسي أو الإحراج حيث تختف الكلمات المحظورة وفقا لموضوعاتها مثل الموت و الجنس، أو لخداع الناس في الموضوع السياسي.

و نظرا لأن التعبيرات التلطيفية هي موضوع ثقافي، فقد يواجه المترجمون صعوبات في ترجمتها من لغة إلى أخرى، خاصة عند الأخذ في الاعتبار أن بعض اللغويين يشيرون إلى أن بعضا منها غير قابل للترجمة.

و من حيث المنهجية، بحثت الدراسة الحالية عن الكلمات و التعبيرات الملطفة في 1984 لجورج أورويل، كما بحثت في الاستراتيجيات التي اتبعها المترجمان العربيان في ترجمة هذه الكلمات و العبارات، و درست الصعوبات التي واجهاها خلال عملية الترجمة.

أظهرت النتائج أن النبهان و الشامي استخدما استراتيجيات مخطفة لترجمة الكلمات أو التعبيرات الملطفة في عام 1984.

و قد واجها صعوبات لغوية و ثقافية.

فمن الناحية اللغوية، ظهرت الصعوبة بسبب وجود "Newspeak"، كلغة ثانية بالإضافة إلى اللغة الإنجليزية.

و من ناحية ثقافية، فإن طبيعة الثقافة الأوقيانوسية، و هي مجتمع 1984، شبه ثقافة العرب تقريبا، مما يجعل الفجوة الثقافية غير مركية من خلال الترجمة.

English Abstract

The present study focuses on taboo words and euphemistic expressions in two translations of George Orwell’s 1984.

The first translation is Al-Hareth Al-Nabhan’s, and the other is Anwar Al-Shami’s.

Euphemism is the substitution of taboo words or expressions.

It is used to avoid directness, either to soften harsh situation or embarrassment in terms of different topics such as death and sex, or to manipulate people in terms of political euphemism.

Because euphemism is a cultural aspect, translators may face difficulties in translating it from one language into another, especially when taking into consideration that some linguists suggest that it is untranslatable.

Methodologically, the current study has investigated the euphemistic words and expressions in George Orwell's 1984, investigated the strategies the two Arabic translators have followed in translating such words and expressions, and pinpointed the problems with their translations.

The results have shown that Al-Nabhan and Al-Shami often used different strategies to translate the euphemistic words or expressions in 1984.

They have faced linguistic and cultural difficulties.

Linguistically, the difficulty appeared due to the existence of Newspeak, as a second source language in addition to English.

Culturally, the nature of the Oceanian culture, the society of 1984, is almost very similar to the Arab culture, which makes the cultural gap rather unseen through translation.
