English Abstract

The present study aims to investigate and analyze the contrastive features of question particles used to form wh-questions in Arabic and English by focusing on the similarities and differences between them.

Standard Arabic and English are distinct from each other but they do share some general syntactic features.

Methodologically, this study has made of Contrastive Analysis in comparing Standard Arabic and English in terms of their ways of forming wh-questions.

The question particles of each language are introduced with special emphasis on their uses.

The ways of forming questions in both languages are described, and then they are compared by giving examples from the data collected to see the points of similarity and difference in the formation of questions in the two languages at the sentence level.

The results have shown that Standard Arabic and English resemble and differ from each other in many aspects.

Question particlesin both languages have the same purposes of asking informational questions, and they are placed at the beginning of the question.

The study has found that there are some rules for making wh-questions in English that do not exist in Arabic such as the change in the word order by adding the auxiliaries.
