Abstract EN
Due to the negative impacts of fossil fuels, many countries have had to explore other sources of energy that are more appropriate and renewable to the environment.
Wind energy is one of the popular forms of energy.
Since wind has a random characteristic nature, it is very important to assess the wind energy potential for Libya.
This paper represents wind resource assessment for mountainous area in Libya.
In this study, wind characteristics and assessment of wind energy potential.
wrere analyzed using the wind speed data measured during the period 2004- 2009 from metrological stations in Nalut city.
In order to assess the wind energy potential a widely used statistical tool has been chosen and it is known as Weibull Distribution Function.
A relative comparison has been made for these sites in the view point of two important factors (shape factor, k and scale factor, c).
Based on these data, it was found that the monthly mean wind speed ranged from 3.97 m/s in Augusts to 5.1 m/s in March, the monthly values of Weibull shape parameter (k).
ranged from 2.85 to 7.83, while the value of scale parameter (c) ranged from 4.24 to 5.6 m/s and the monthly wind power density ranged from 41.36 to 108.04 W/nr.
The seasonal mean wind speed data ranged from 4.01 to 4.94 m/s, while the wind power density was ranged from 42.219 to 99.488 W/nr for autumn and winter, respectively.
