Abstract EN

This study aims to touch the artistic features of self and identity, and the points of contact between them in two literary genres.

These two genres have their own special forms: novels derived from biographies (biographical novel), and biographies.

The two selected works are the Albert Camus’s French novel "The First Man" and the autobiography of Rizvi Ashour, "Heavier than Radwa" and "The Cry." These works have been chosen for their similarity in some points.

The similarities result from the fact that most of the raw narrative material of these two literary genres is derived from the lives of the writers themselves.

Whereas the differences are found in the obscurities the author of the biographical novel attaches to this life, which is expressed through names, persons, times or places.

The writer of the biography, on the other hand, drops these obscurities and presents an artistic portrayal of his/her personal life.

A biography is the most literary genre concerned with identity issues, and it is most interested in redrawing the boundaries of the inconstant identity, which is reflected in the writing strategy.

The study begins with a series of questions about the essence of writer’s writing self and written self.

It will also investigate the difference between them and the degree of neutrality of the self-narrated vision.

The study will then focus on the degree of imagination while writing and reorganizing events in a systematic narrative text.

The study continues with an examination of the fictional cue in a cross-genre biographical novel.

The genres are all categorized under the literature of self-reflection and expression: literature memos, diaries, and selfportrait.

After that, the study will focus on self-portrait in both these literary genres, and how to objectify all that is subjective.

Finally, the study will point out the characteristics of individual identity and its relation to national identity.

The study adopts the deliberative approach as the method of using language to express meanings, ideas and purposes.

It is concerned with the study of linguistic signs during their use in the context of communication, and taking into account everything that surrounds the process of linguistic communication.
