Abstract EN

This study tackles vocal extension in Arabic syllables, a minor ambivalent morphophoncmic phenomenon which is intuitively realized and nonanalogically used in both standard and dialectal Arabic.

This phenomenon shonld not be overlooked by linguistic researches for it bears some significant effect on Arabic discourse.

It frequently occurs in standard Arabic verse (and prose) and the various Quranic reading styles.

It is also widely manifested in Arabic dialects and folk songs which are prominently accentuated .

The purpose of this paper is twofold.

Firstly, it provides ample examples of the linguistic phenomenon, and secondly it purports to identify and account for the rules or constraints that determine the discoursal function of this phenomenon.

The study concludes with the fact that vocal extension occurs in Arabic, and like pausing, either optionally or obligatorily in final syllables and along with pausing in the various morphological constituents .

It comprises two combined vowels: the simple, basic one and the combined, extended one (the secondary vowel).

Roth vowels are realized as one and the same single vowel is longer than the usual one in the normal morphophonemic environment.

Vocal extension, it has been shown, produces a significant effect on the normal and natural morphological structures resulting thus in two vowel parts (the basic vowel part and the extended vowel part).

The emerging form is analyzable as simple lengthening (e.g.

yanba :yanbaa Tihaal : Tiihaal, Lubaan: Luubaan), and as extra -lengthening (e.g.

shufa’aa shufa aaa , etc sii’a : siii’a , quruu’ : quruuu, etc ).

Furthermore the study shows that vocal extension has various functions: lexico-grammatical and prosodic .

The former relates to the derivation process, such as in metathesis, assimilation and double compounds with syllable permutation.

The latter function tends to invoke semantic signification, particularly in the metrical, metaphorical and rhythmic realizations of the language.
