Approaches to the Arabic sentence : a diachronic study

Abstract EN

This study explores the approaches to the Arabic sentence.

It discusses (1) the logical definitions of sentence, (2) the linguistic definitions of sentence, (3) Attitudes of Arab grammarians towards “utterance” and “sentence”, and (4) Sentence classes.

Various views, opinions and definitions put forward by both early and modern Arab grammarians have been investigated.

It is hoped that this study will be of some theoretical value to those concerned with the linguistic studies.
