Washington Irving is considered the father of the American short stoiy .

His writings show the formulation of the American myth.

American myth deal with supernatural beings, ancestors, or heroes that serves as a fundamental type in the culture of the American people, as by explaining aspects of the natural world or presenting the psychology, customs, or ideals of American society.

This research is an attempt to show how Irving differs from other American writers in employing German and some European legends.

This gives his thematic dimension an important cultural aspect, and this is so vividly expressed in The Legend of the Sleepy Hollow .
