Reaction of Benzil with an aldehyde, 4-trityl aniline and NH4OAc under reflux gave highly substituted imidazoles in good yields using accessible and nontoxic KMnO4 as catalyst under mild reaction conditions.

This method is simple, efficient and eco-friendly.

All imidazoles were characterized using FT-IR, Mass spectrometry, 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR Nuclear magnetic resonance spectral techniques.
