This paper studies Ibn Shahid's self-elegy in terms of the influences that shape it and its major characteristics.

The paper begins with a foreword followed by an introductory overview of the self-elegy's history in the poetry of the Levant and Andalusia.

In the first of its two sections, the paper discusses the influences which contribute to shaping Ibn Shahid's self-elegy, while in the second it analyzes its major thematic and stylistic characteristics.

The paper ends with stating its key conclusions.
