Abstract EN

This article presents a Sufi Muslim religious institution of the Zawiya, which occupied a leading position in the organization and supervision of the social life in the Algerian society.

Especially when the state institutions have not come to exist yet.

Although, the role of the organization and supervision is minor compared to the spiritual role that the Zawiya was established to do.

The Zawiya is an expressive and practical space where Sheikh of Zawiya acts as a projection of God.

On the light of this, we distinguish between the religious and secular roles for which the Zawiya was established in the first place.

Through various historical stations, the concept of Zawiya was reinforced in the social environment generally and took an important existentialist form in the daily lives of individuals specifically.

These facts raise key questions such as, Is the contemporary Zawiya still have the same social status? Are the conditions that coincided the genesis of Zawiya still the same? This article aims at answering these questions.
