The reader receives new literary works armed with precedent aquisitions wich is formed from his previous readings, this experience determines the reader's outlook and expectations, but the new work does not always come compatible with it and disappoint the receiver's wating, so a gap arises between the given or already established horizon and the appearance of a new work, called by (Jauss) the aesthetic distance.

This term refers to the renewal of the new work compared to its predecessors, and has been regarded as a criterian of quality considering disappointment as necessary for evolution.
