Abstract EN

The present research work seeks to cast light on one of the pertinent issues with regard to ellipsis as being a vivid phenomenon, highlighting its suggestive and aesthetic functions which can be approached and analysed so that to consider the various efforts held by the rhetoric and the method being used to treat them from linguistic and rhetorical perspectives.

A careful examination of the present subject matter revealed that grammarians have always linked ellipsis as a phenomenon with the theory of grammar and the speech context; whereas the rhetorical approach of it requires to approach its aesthetic and semantic dimensions as well as its communicative purposes which place the speaker in a position where he is expected to ensure the consistency, coherence and integrity of his speech so that to convey meaning to the listener.

In light of this, the questions which is brought to the surface is that to what extent the Arab rhetoric is aware of the great importance of the structural and distributive levels of linguistic and rhetorical displacement?
