This research deals with the idea of the shift between the classical rhetoricians and modern linguists of rhetoric, showing the view of both groups on the concept of displacement and their respective criteria in determining it.

Although they agree in the general perception of the concept of displacement, classical linguists rely on criteria to control them, the most important of which are logical, common, and descriptive.

On the other hand, modern linguists rely on general criteria to control it, which is what would make the speech superfluous to the familiar rules or deviate from them or create an unexpected effect on the receiver.
