Literary texts that include comedy are deemed to be the most difficult texts to understand and construe in view of the fact that they contain many implicit meanings and tacit intentions, to constitute as such major challenges for the reader-translator or rather test his or her mastery of linguistic and non-linguistic elements of the literary text.

To bring the ironic figure closer to the reader, the translator is compelled to decode the encoded ironic language taking into account the meaning lying between the explicit and implicit and both the semantic and pragmatic dimensions.

The translator’s first task is interpreting before translating.

Indeed, translation is, basically, an act of interpretation, and interpretation is an integral part of the pragmatic field.

As such, the best way to accomplish the mission of putting the ironic text into another more proper linguistic format is to consider the pragmatic interpretation and the pragmatic translation mechanisms that will help deduce the implicit meanings and hidden communicative intentions included in the ironic text.
