Abstract EN

This paper proposes to explore the importance of economic independence on women's emancipation, within and outside the institution of marriage in selected short stories of Charlotte Perkins Gilman: Deserted (1893), According To Solomon (1909) and Making A Change (1911).

Operating from the belief that the root of gender inequality is economic, Gilman believes that once women were financially self-sufficient, the marital relationship would be based on respect, love and true partnership.
