Frequency of entamoeba gingivalis and trichomonas tenax and its associated factors among patients attending dental clinic of dentistry faculty, Aden, Yemen

The present study was carried out to determine the frequency of Entamoeba gingivalis (E.

gingivalis) and Trichomonas tenax (T.

tenax), and their associated factors among 50 (27 males and 23 females) patients with periodontal disease (case group) and 50(29 males and 21 females), participants with healthy gingiva (control group) by using wet mount technique using physiological saline and eosine stain.

The frequency of both E.

gingivalis and T.

tenax was 34% and the prevalence of E.

gingivalis and T.

tenax among cases with periodontal diseases was 24% and 10% respectively.

The highest prevalence of both E.

gingivalis and T.

tenax was found among the age group 31- 40 years.

Both infections were predominant among females than in males.

The highest frequency of E.

gingivalis was among patients with dental caries followed by gingivitis, and periodontitis while the highest prevalence of T.

tenax was among patients with gingivitis followed by dental caries and periodontitis.

With regard to control group, only two positive cases of T.

tenax in male, and one positive case of E.

gingivalis in female were found.

The study demonstrated that the risk factors associated with the occurrence of infection were smoking, chewing Qat, not using tooth brush and Miswak.We conclude that E.

gingivalis and T.

tenax are more common among patients with periodontal disease and they are more prevalent among females than males.
