Exploring the correlation between Iraqi EFL learners' self efficacy and their English language achievement

Nowadays, Understanding learners' perceptions and their beliefs is important because the focus of education has shifted from a teacher-directed to learner-oriented classroom.

Therefore ; the current study is conducted to investigate the self-efficacy of EFL students at University of Basrah.

More specifically, the aim is to explore the self-efficacy level of the students in relation to their achievement in English.

Data on the learners' self-efficacy are collected from the Questionnaire of English Self-Efficacy (QESE).

Despite the large body of self-efficacy research found in other academic disciplines, few studies have examined the self-efficacy of foreign language students and more precisely research has focused on the relationship between self-efficacy and the academic achievement of language learners.

Sixty six students from Basra University participated in this experimental study.

The results showed that there is a positive correlation between the dimensions of self- efficacy and academic achievement in the English language.
