The effect of using fish-bowl strategy on developing English language conversation skills among high vs. low achievers of third-graders

The aim of this study was to examine using the fishbowl strategy to develop the third graders’ performance of English conversation adopting a quasi-experimental design.

data were collected using a test developed for the purpose of the current study to assess students’ English conversation skills.

The sample of the study contained 44 students purposively chosen from Dar al-Arqam Islamic primary school at the directorate of education of the university, capital governorate.

students were equally divided into two groups; an experimental group of 22 male and female students who were taught English speaking lessons via fishbowl strategy and a control group of 22 male and female students who educated by the ordinary method.

on the basis of their performance level, students were categorized into high and low levels.

the results pointed out statistically significant differences between students in posttest of conversation skills that can be attributed to the teaching method.

on the other hand, no statistically significant differences were found due to the performance level or the interaction between students ’performance levels and teaching method.

hence, English teachers were recommended to apply fishbowl strategy in English instruction.

teacher training on fishbowl strategy is also suggested.
