Mapping the idiomatic terrain: in search of an association between translation and comprehension strategies

Idiomatic expressions are a defining characteristic of languages and cultures.

Understanding them often poses a challenge to learners, and so does translating them.

The aim of the present paper is to investigate the relation between translation strategies and eventual comprehension.

Five research questions were raised along with five hypotheses.

A questionnaire was administered in class to 48 Master 1 learners of English at Mila University Centre.

The collected data were submitted to a Chi-square test in SPSS.

A mixture of results was obtained and implications are discussed.
