Urinary tract bacteriology and phagocytotic activities in diabetes mellitus patients

Bacteriological screening of urine samples taken from 140 patients of diabetes mellitus attending Diabetes Mellitus (DM) Center in the AL-Yarmouk Teaching Hospital was performed.

Bacterial etiogenesis of the urogenital tract infection was significantly increased, especially among women.

Gram negative bacteria represented 55.5% of isolates, whereas gram positive bacteria represented 28.1%.

E coli, S.

aureus and Candida albicans exhibited 20.6, 14.3 and 15.9%, respectively.

Phagocytic activity was decreased in phagocytes of DM patients and in both sexes.

Bacterial, as well as, Candidal infections had no significant influence on the activity of phagocytosis.
