In vitro antifungal activity of nigella sativa oil against Candida Albicans

Objective : To investigate the antifungal activity of Nigella sativa oil from Saudi Arabia and Ethiopia against the growth of Candida albicans.

Methodology : The study was carried out in microbiology laboratory using the modified paper disc- diffusion method.

Nigella Sativa oil (NSO) from Saudi Arabia (NSOS) and Ethiopia (NSOE) was purchased from the market.

Nystatin was used as positive control.

Results : In vitro, NSOE showed greater inhibitory action than NSOS against the growth of Candida albicans.

The effect was directly proportional to the volume concentration used.

The effect was clear and comparable with the positive control Nystatin.

Conclusion : Oil of Nigella sativa showed obvious antifungal activity in vitro against the growth of Candida albicans.
