Fine needle aspiration cytology findings in thyroid enlargement in Aden 2005-2007

Objective : The aim of this study was to evaluate the different patterns of thyroid gland swellings among patients who underwent FNAC.

Materials and Methods : The study was a retrospective study based on records of patients attended the modern histopathological laboratory in almansourah, Aden, for fancy of thyroid during the years 2005 to 2007.

All FNA cytology reports, sex, age and residence area were reviewed.

Results : Two hundred and seventy-two (272) FNAC were performed on patients presenting with diffuse or nodular thyroid enlargement.

They were 256 (94.1 %( females and 16 males (5.9 %), with a ratio male / female 1 : 16.

Their ages ranged from 11 to 80years with an average of 35.5 ± 14.2 years.

FNAC analysis revealed 178 (65.5 %) non-toxic colloid goiter, 36 (13.2 %) hashimoto's thyroiditis, 28 (10.3 %) follicular adenoma, 21 (7.7 %) nodular goiter and 9 (3.3 %) benign neoplasm.

No malignancy thyroid gland swellings were found.

Conclusion The results were comparable with the previous published study in Aden, it provides useful information for health planning and future researches.
