Preparation and spectroscopic studies of a new N2O2 Schiff base ligand and some of it’s metal complexes

A new Schiff base ligand Bis (salicyldene) tetra methyl benzamine (TMBBS), was prepared from the condensation of salicylaldehyde and 3, 3-, 5, 5- tetra methylbenzidine in ethanol solution.

This molecule coordinates to a variety of divalent metal ions M + 2 (M = Co, Ni, Cu, Zn) and one type of complexes was obtained with general formula [M (TMBBS)] 2.

Solubility, melting point, (C.H.N) analysis, molar conductance, 1 H NMR spectrum, Infrared and UV-Visible spectra studies were used in characterizing the ligand and its complexes.

The potentiometer analysis of the metal complexes revealed 1 : 1 (Schiff base : metal ion) Stoichiometry.
