الملخص الإنجليزي

In the present study, methanol extracts of Astragalus sieberi, Ballota undulata, Varthemia iphionoides, Linum mucronatum and Phlomis armeniaca were examined for its antioxidant and antibacterial activities for five bacterial strains (S.

aureus, E.

coli, K.

pneumoniae, B.

subtilis, and M.

luteus).

The antibacterial activity for K.

pneumoniae (Gram negative bacteria) and S.

aureus B.

subtilis and M.

luteus (Gram positive bacteria) was reported with the extract of A.

sieberi, V.

iphionoides, and P.

armeniaca, while A.

sieberi showed the highest antibacterial activity for K.

pneumoniae, S.

aureus, B.

subtilis and M.

luteus.

The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) were 250, 500, 250 and 250 µg / ml, respectively, compared to A.

sieberi, where MeOH extracts of P.

armeniaca and V.

iphionoides showed a lower antibacterial activity.

The extracts from B.

Undulata and L.

mucronatum did not show any antibacterial activity against these bacterial strains.

The total plant phenol content in dry extract, of V.

iphionoides, and P.

armeniaca were found 205 and 188 mg GAE / g respectively, while A.

sieberi, B.

undulate and L.

mucronatum were 66, 87 and 74 mg GAE / g, respectively.

The DPPH method was used to measure the radical scavenging activity of plant extracts, whereas, the FRAP was used to measure the ferric reducing antioxidant power.

The highest free radical scavenging activities (reflected by the smallest IC50 values) were exerted by P.

armeniaca and V.

iphionoides extract (1.07 and 1.11 mg Trolox / ml, respectively).

The lowest radical scavenging activity was exhibited by L.

mucronatum, A.

sieberi and B.

undulata (IC50 : 9.84, 9.49 and 3.2 mg Trolox / ml, respectively).

Same trends were appeared when the above plants tested in FRAP for antioxidant activity.

High positive correlation was appeared between the total phenolic content and the antioxidant activity calculated TEACDPPH and TEACFRAP methods.

This correlation was expressed by the correlation coefficient (R), which was 0.987 and 0.93 for the TEACDPPH and TEACFRAP, respectively.

Both methods, showed a high correlation with TPCs, indicating that both methods are efficient for antioxidant measurements.
