الملخص الإنجليزي

Antibacterial and antioxidant properties of methanolic extracts derived from aerial parts of four Jordanian medicinal plants (Sarcopoterium spinosum, Paronychia argentea, Inula viscosa, and Achillea fragrantissima) were investigated in this study.

Serial dilution and disc diffusion methods were performed to measure the antibacterial activity of these extracts against different bacterial strains (S.

aureus, E.

coli, K.

pneumoniae, B.

subtilis and M.

luteus).

The total phenolic content was assessed by Folin-Ciocalteau method.

The amount of the extract required to scavenge 50% of DPPH radical (IC50) was also measured.

The antioxidant capacities was assessed by both DPPH and FRAP methods.

The possible relationship between the antioxidant capacity and the total phenolic content of these extracts was also determined.

Variations were observed among the examined plants in antibacterial and antioxidant activities as well as in their phenol contents.

The results of antibacterial investigation showed that I.

viscosa exhibited the highest antibacterial activity against all tested bacterial strains as compared to S.

spinosum, A.

fragrantissima and P.

argentea.

S.

spinosum contained the highest amount of phenolic compounds (320 mg GA g-1 plant extract) followed by I.

viscosa, A.

fragrantissima, and P.

argentea (258, 87, and 83 mg GA g-1 plant extract, respectively).

According to the IC50 values of DPPH assay, the highest free radical scavenging potential was found in S.

spinosum (0.3 mg mL-1), followed by I.

viscosa, A.

fragrantissima, and P.

argentea (0.58, 3.06, and 3.42 mg mL-1, respectively).

The trend for ferric ions reducing activities of the four plant extracts did not vary markedly from their DPPH free radical scavenging activities.

In conclusion, these plants are not only interesting sources for antimicrobial agents but also have a considerable amount of antioxidants.

In addition, these findings revealed that the antioxidant capacity of these plant extracts could be attributed to their total phenolic content.
