Saul Bellow (1915-2005) is an American novelist, playwright, essayist, and short story writer.

He is the Nobel Prize winner in literature in 1976.

He is recognised as a novelist of the intellectuals for all his works are concerned with the figure of the intellectual who goes through a multiple of crises.

The aim of this paper is to demonstrate the pros and cons of the intellectual's role and behaviour; and to trace his reactions in dealing with such intense crises so as to find a suitable elucidation.
