Modeling of layered beams using the undetermined multipliers method

The Lagrange multipliers used through the Undetermined Multipliers Method (UMM) has been proven to be a reliable technique in solving structural problems, where, the Rayleigh–Ritz potential energy formulation is used to minimize the strain energy of a structural system.

In this study, the reliability and the applicability of this method, in solving layered beams made of different materials attached firmly together, is investigated.

The stress distributions, along the joining edges of two beams, were compared with classical and the finite element models, which all showed good agreement with the Undetermined Multipliers Method.

Other attachment and design factors were also investigated.

The method in this study showed again good applicability and reliability for solving this class of structural problems.
