الملخص الإنجليزي

A method for synthesis of monosaccharides has been developed.

It involved reaction the formite salt with a precursor made up of one carbon atom and containing a carbonyl group.

Glycolaldehyde, glyceraldehyde, tetroses, pentoses, and hexoses were found to be the products of the stepwise addition of such a reagent to the corresponding substrates.

The formite ion adds across the double bond and gives rise to the alkoxide salt of the parent sugar.

On protonation this yields the respective monosaccharide. The next member of the homologous series is obtained by treating the resultant monosaccharide in a similar manner. Identification of the products so obtained was achieved by determination of molecular weights, melting points, Rf and infrared spectra, and number of hydroxyl groups.

The results obtained were found to be consistent with those cited in the literature.
