Reduced serum creatine kinase in active rheumatoid arthritis

Our objective was to determine serum creatine kinase (CK) activity in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and to examine its relationsthip to disease activity and severity.

Serum CK activity was significantly lower in patients with RA as compared to controls.

There was a significant positive correlation between CK values and Hb and RBCs.

A significant negative correlation was found between CK activity and disease duration, disease activity index, ESR, total leucocytic count and platelets.

On the other hand, no relation was observed between CK activity and the duration of morning stiffness, RF or erosive X-ray changes.

These findings suggest that disease activity may play an important role in reducing CK activity in RA patients.
