Altered circulating Thrombomodulin and antithrombin-111 as evidence for varied activation of the coagulation cascade in pre-eclampsia

Objective: To study the changes of two natural anticoagulant factors, circulating thrombomodulin [TM] and anti thrombin 111 [AT 111] activity, in both maternal and fetal cord plasma of women with pre-eclampsia and its correlation with postpartum regression of pre-eclampsia.

Methods: Venous plasma samples were collected from 60 pregnant women; 20 women with severe pre-eclampsia; 20 women with mild pre-eclampsia and 20 normotensive healthy women with singleton pregnancies in the third trimester.

Plasma levels of thrombomodulin and antithrombin 111 in the antepartum and postpartum periods were measured by an enzyme-linked immunoassay with momoclonal antibodies.
